If you're one of the many who know and appreciate the efforts and sacrifices made by the employees of Air America, Inc., Continental Air Services, Inc. and BirdAir, then I'm glad you found your way here. Part homage and part display, these pages will be filled with photos from collections from around the world, and hopefully from some old Asia hands themselves. Many people think of Air America, Inc. in terms of the Vietnam war and this photo but their history goes far beyond the evacuation of Saigon. Begin with a small, privately-owned airline flying a regular schedule in China. Fast forward past these humble beginnings to a point at which Air America, Inc. was the world's largest airline in terms of flying equipment. End with the famous photo of the helo on a rooftop in Saigon. In between remember countless SAR missions, passenger flights, recon flights, rice drops, freight transport flights, infils, exfils, maintenance, missions that still can't be talked about, strict maintenance and safety programs, training, and many, many "routine flight hours of boredom punctuated by minutes of sheer terror" (to paraphrase an ex-pilot).
I am working on not only this website, but also a book entitled Airlines of the Vietnam War. If you have any of the items on our Needed Page page please email me so that we can record it to be photographed for the book. Full credit will be given where requested. We're really excited about this and hope to be able to find everything so, if you are an old Air America, CASI or BirdAir hand it's time to empty your attic, your closet, open up that footlocker or barrel you've got stashed away and see what you can fish out of the past. Any help would be appreciated!
If you're a collector take a look through the galleries. There's quite a lot of reproductions out there, an awful lot of bad information, and even worse, quite a lot of really good-looking reproduction and fantasy stuff. Learn and you'll protect yourself. We'll add photos as we get them and appreciate your donations of photos. As a small, but dedicated group, we've got to band together to protect ourselves from the many reproductions, copies and fantasy items on the market.
Lastly, the Air America Association would like to make the famous photo into a stamp commemorating their efforts. Visit their page and write a letter of support to your Congressman.
A reminder, Air-America.Net is NOT affiliated with the Air America Association. Their website may be found at http://www.air-america.org We appreciate the support and kindness of many of the individual members of the AAM Association. They are some of the finest, most open, honest and sharing individuals we have met. Thank you all for your time and for opening your hearts (and closets) to this project.
Please note: I DO NOT sell items. Many of the items in the galleries have been loaned and photographed with the permission of the owners. They are not for sale. I do purchase and trade for original items for my own collection, this website and for the book and have listed some of what I am looking for on my Wanted page. However, I am more interested in photographing items for the website and book. Any items loaned for photographs will be promptly returned and credit given where requested. Thank you in advance for your understanding and assistance.
